Profile:
Winston Doherty obtained his B.Sc (Hons) and M.Sc degrees from the Chemistry Department, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1998 and 2006, respectively. He then proceeded to Monash University, Australia, where he is currently pursuing a PhD degree in the area of Inorganic Chemistry. Mr. Doherty joined the services of the Chemistry Department, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 2000.
Mr Doherty is a member of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Society of Nigeria and the Institute of Chartered Chemist of Nigeria. He has also received a couple of academic awards which include, 2012 Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) and the 2011 Monash Graduate School stipend scholarship.
Area of Specialisation / Research Interest:
Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry: Much of his earlier research activities were devoted to synthesis of carbamoyl phosphonates and coordination chemistry (complexation of metals with antibiotics).
NanoScience & Biosensor Technology: Currently, his attention is on fabrication of highly sensitive and selective novel nanobiosensors for the detection of antibiotics based on the galvanostatic embedment of carbon nanotubes, metallic nanoparticles and graphene together with the enzyme, into different conducting and non-conducting polymer matrices. He probes the presence of nanoparticles and enzyme by a range of electrochemical techniques and advanced surface analytical techniques. He also looks into possible analytical application of fabricated nanobiosensors to the determination of antibiotics in food and pharmaceutical preparations.
